With flu season starting up, I thought it appropriate to bring up an issue of some debate. Flu vaccines are promoted for children and the elderly, especially those with other serious medical conditions. All fine and dandy. I agree these people should get them. However, there is concern that a serious pandemic will occur sometime in the near future. I wonder if governments are prepared for such an event. Vaccines are produced in limited amounts each year. Will we be able to cope with the demand for more vaccines in an emergency? Also, what will be the priority in such an emergency? Will we still put priority on children and the elderly? Or would it make more sense to vaccinate the healthy, productive adult who will be required to work during such an outbreak? Will it be in our best interest to still reserve vaccines for the weak? Sacrifice the healthy and save the sick? I certainly hope the governments already have plans in place.
